Rays and Beam

Ray

A narrow path of light represented by a line with an arrow head showing the direction in which it is traveling called a ray of light. The ray can be parallel to each other. If a very small source of light is used, the rays will go outwards.

Beam

A group of light rays is called a beam of light. A beam of light is broader and consists of several rays. In the laboratory, a beam of light is normally produced by using a light box. It consists of a bulb kept inside a cardboard box with a hole in it for the light to come out.

There are different type of  beam of light

1. Parallel Beam of light: When the group of rays are parallel to each other such beam of light is called a parallel beam of light.

2. Convergent Beam of light: When the group of rays are not parallel to each other but are converging at a point such beam of light is called a convergent beam of light.

3. Divergent Beam of light: When the group of rays are not parallel to each other but are diverging from a point such beam of light is called a divergent beam of light.

4. Diffused Beam of light: When the group of rays are not parallel to each other but are intersecting each other such beam of light is called a diffused beam of light.
